Texas Birthday Song

Copyright 1988 Dana Clark

I didn't know what to get you for your birthday

'Cause you've already got what it takes

You've already got those silver spurs

Strapped on boots that are made out of snakes

You've got cactus embroidered on your shorts

Armadillos on your socks

Well, I wanted to give you the whole state of Texas

But it would not fit in a box

Oh! It would not fit in a box

Well, I thought it was probably just what you wanted

And I knew it would be a surprise

But I could not find enough Hallmark paper

Or a ribbon that was the right size

I wanted to give you something much ore than all of the gold in Fort Knox

Well I wanted to give you the whole state of Texas

But it would not fit in a box

Oh! It would not fit in a box

So I picked it up with one hand on El Paso

And one on the Southern shore

And I tried to fold it up right in the middle

But the Rio Grande leaked on the floor

And a palm tree poked me right in the eye

And an oil well dripped on my socks

Well, I wanted to give you the whole state of Texas

But it would not fit in a box

Oh! It would not fit in a box
