Homemade Dresses and Homemade Songs

VERSE: Cornfields in the summertime
Blue skies where the clouds roll by
Gardens full of butterflies
Crickets singing through the night
Bare feet and a dusty road
A can of worms and a fishing pole
Afternoons that never end
Roller skates and my best friend

See it so clear when I close my eyes
I guess I'll always wonder why
Time must pass and things must change
Even me, I feel so strange
Lingers on in my memory
Just the way it used to be
So many years and miles away
Seems like it was yesterday

CHORUS: Grandpa always took me fishing
Grandma taught me right from wrong
My sister made me learn to sing "Amazing Grace"
Daddy helped me to be strong
My Mama made the things that money couldn't buy me
Homemade dresses and homemade songs

VERSE: Time seemed like it moved so slow
The winter we had all the snow
Warm inside, no place to go
We could hear the cold wind blow
Faces smiled in the fire glow
Piano and a fiddle and an old banjo
Mama sang high, Papa sang low
Now it seems so long ago

I packed my suitcase full of songs
I said "I won't be gone too long"
How was I to know that when you leave
You can't return again
Things don't ever stay the same
Time and love can't be reclaimed
What is past is surely gone
But the memories come back so strong

CHORUS: Grandpa always took me fishing
Grandma taught me right from wrong
My sister made me learn to sing "Amazing Grace"
Daddy helped me to be strong
My Mama made the things that money couldn't buy me
