"The music of Peace Is Our Birthright sings forth the claim to all of our rights
and the rights of future generations to justice and peace.  Like peace itself,
sometimes the words are sweet and simple, other times edgey and profound.
The melodic voice becomes advocate."

1.  Nothing But Peace

Copyright 1986 Jim Scott

Nothing but peace is enough for me

Nothing but peace is enough

Nothing but peace is enough

Nothing but peace is enough for me

Well I’m feeling such mixed emotions right now

I’ve got to say it to someone

We’ve got to do this more than just holidays

Got to be in it for the long run

For the long run

How can weapons of war be weapons of peace?

We are fighting in a different fashion.

We too are working for peace through strength

Though our strength is in our compassion

In our compassion.

Well, the going is easy, the going is tough,

But more of the world we are reaching

To the makers of war we say we’ve had enough

It’s only peace we are teaching

We are teaching

The freedom to speak and the freedom to choose

Are a right and responsibility

Without vigilance, freedoms are easy to lose

And there’s no freedom without equality

With equality

German:  Frieden allein ist genug fur mich, frieden alien ist genug

Frieden allein ist genug, frieden alien ist genug fur mich

Arabic (phonetic):  La shai el-la salaam li, la shai el-la salaam

La shai el-la salaam li, la shai el-la salaam

Russian (phonetic):  Mir tolka mir nu-zhi nam si-chasse, mir tolka mir nu-zhi nam

Mir tolka mir nu-zhi nam, mir tolka mir nu-zhi nam si-chasse

Only Love Can Do That

Copyright 2003 Richard Mekdeci

Darkness cannot drive away darkness.  Only light can do that.

Hatred cannot drive away hatred.  Only love can do that.

Darkness cannot drive away darkness.  Only light can do that.

Hatred cannot drive away hatred.  Only love can do that.

Oh, you soldiers of peace,

Hatred has an enemy.

If we want the fighting to cease,

Remember these words from the fallen king

Darkness cannot drive away darkness.  Only light can do that.

Hatred cannot drive away hatred.  Only love can do that.

We all must try to be an instrument of peace

Remember an eye for an eye leaves everyone blind

And our children never see

Darkness cannot drive away darkness.  Only light can do that.

Hatred cannot drive away hatred.  Only love can do that.

‘Cause only love can heal

And only love can keep the fear away

And only love is real

And only love will come to save the day

Darkness cannot drive away darkness.  Only light can do that.

Hatred cannot drive away hatred.  Only love can do that.

Darkness cannot drive away darkness.  Only light can do that.

Hatred cannot drive away hatred.  Only love can do that.

Earth

Copyright 1981 David Roth/Maythelight Music (ASCAP)

(
David performed this song at the 40th Anniversary of the United Nations in New York.)

Dream of a day when we can live without anger

Dream of a time when we can live without pain

Dream of a way that we can live without hunger

Dream of a sign that the Earth can be peaceful again

What can we do to get our people looking higher?

What do you do in the darkness but look for the light?

We can join hands and do whatever we desire

And we’ll never fail as long as our reasons are right

We’re gonna live in peace.  It’s our only chance on Earth

Get all that fighting to cease, and remember what life is worth

Each of us has the power to bring about changes

Though society separates us from the time of our birth

We won’t live here much longer if we live as strangers

And no time at all if we don’t learn how to live with the Earth

Combining our efforts instead of being parted.

Sharing a vision that we will have a new dawn

Remember that love is how it all got started

And don’t you know that love will keep it going even after we’re gone

What can we give the Earth that we haven’t given in the past

A way to live here on Earth, make it last and last and last

Dream of a day when we can live in communion

Dream of a time when we can live without fear

Awaken a way to get all of us working together

And know that the time when the Earth can be peaceful is near

And know that our thoughts and our actions are honest and clear and know that the people on Earth will be safe from all fear

Know that the time when the Earth can be peaceful is here.

I Am a Seed of Peace

Copyright 1997 James Durst

I am a seed of peace, seed of peace, a seed of peace.

I am a seed, a seed of peace

I am a seed.  I am a seed of peace

Peace, peace, peace, peace.

People of peace, rejoice, rejoice

For we have united into one voice

A voice of peace, and hate of war.

United hands have built a bridge

Between two shores

We on the shores have torn down the wall

We stand hand in hand as we watch the bricks fall

We’ve learned from the past and fear not what’s ahead

I know I’ll not walk alone but with a friend instead.

I am a seed of peace, seed of peace, a seed of peace.

I am a seed, a seed of peace

I am a seed.  I am a seed of peace

Peace, peace, peace, peace.

Of This World

Copyright 1999 Becca Christel, Tracy Spring, Janis Carper

I can ease the suffering of this world

I can ease the suffering of this world

I can ease the suffering of this world

With my head, my heart, and my hands

With my eyes I can see the way things are, the way they should be

Hope and vision come to me, giving life new meaning.

I can ease the suffering of this world....

And in my heart I can feel the ebb and flow of life revealed.

Pain and sorrow all will heal with love and true compassion.

I can ease the suffering of this world....

With my hand and with my sweat I will do what’s not done yet.

With tenderness and no regrets, embrace the work before me.

I can ease the suffering of this world...

I will not turn my head

I will not close my heart

I will not still my hand

Until my work is done.

I will not turn my head

I will not close my heart

I will not still my hand

Until my work is done.

I can ease the suffering of this world...

My Own Day

Copyright Todd Hoke

If I had my own day everyone would have a home.

Nobody would go hungry.  We’d all know that  we belong

The birds would be singing.  The sun would brightly shine

If I had a day to call mine.

If I had my own day no nation would be at war.

The guns would all get dusty.  We’d forget what they were for.

The generals would go fishing.  They’d close the Pentagon.

If I had a day all my own.

And I know I’m dreaming.

This all sounds naive.

In these time in which we’re living

It’s so hard to believe things like love and human kindness,

That there’s a better way.

Ah, but you just watch what happens, come my day.

If I had my own day, my Grandmother, she’d be proud.

I’d see her smiling down from heaven

and I’d hear her laugh out loud.

She’d say, “Boy, it does this old heart good

To see the things you’ve done

Now you’ve had a busy day

Sleep well my Grandson.

You’ve had a busy day.

Sleep well my Grandson.”

My Piece of the Peace

Copyright Janet O’Connor 2005

We pray for people who hunger.

We pray for peace.

And we’re fighting over the answer.

C’mon people, please.

Well I’m not a soldier, but I’ll lay my weapons down

Self righteous indignation buried in the ground

I cannot hope to help you see ‘till I have found

My own piece of the peace.

My own piece of the peace.

There’s a war over the ocean and a war in my heart

I’m thinkin’ it seems the war closest to home

Would be the best place to start

Am I withholding forgiveness?

God has withheld nothing from me

Self seeking desperation stole my liberty

I cannot hope to help a soul until I see

My own piece of the peace

My own piece of the peace

Feel the sting of the anger and feel the love

We must be wise as a serpent,  harmless as a dove

Well I’m not a sailor, but I’ll sail the seven seas

I will carry a candle.  I will love my enemies.

Set my light on a hill and let it shine from west to east

That’s my piece of the peace.

That’s my piece of the peace.

My own piece of the piece of the peace.

We Share the Dream of Peace

Copyright 2003 Sue Kroupa, David Roth, Jana Stanfield

My skin may be a different shade, my language not the same,

We pray in different places, call God by different names.

My clothing may not be like yours, might stand out in a crowd,

But in universal Spirit, there are differences allowed.

We have the precious present

And our presence holds the key

To a world that is more loving

As we share the dream of peace,

As we share the dream of peace.

My arms embrace my children.  I fall in love.  I cry.

I marvel at the sunset as another day goes by.

But halfway ‘round the world I know, your rain brings rainbows, too.

Though we might seem so different, I am just the same as you.

We have the precious present

And our presence holds the key

To a world that is more loving

As we share the dream of peace,

As we share the dream of peace.

Imagining the future, remembering the past,

Together we can co-create a vision that will last.

We have the precious present

And our presence holds the key

To a world that is more loving

As we share the dream of peace,

As we share the dream of peace.

Hearts on Fire

Copyright  Rudi Harst

Hearts on fire, burning with desire

Hearts on fire, burning with the flame

Hearts on fire, burning with desire

Hearts on fire, never be the same

Never be the same

the same old same old isn’t working anymore

a new way is coming won’t you open the door

Our culture’s in shock and our future’s in doubt

but with our hearts on fire we can find a way out

Hearts on fire….

Young man, old man, woman and child.

Each and everyone of us is born to be wild

Born to take chances, to learn to fly

With our hearts on fire we can dance through the sky

Hearts on fire…

The old world is dying, can’t you hear the alarm

Each and everyone of us is called to arms

Arms of loving, arms to embrace

The changes that are happening in the human race

Hearts on fire, burning with desire

Hearts on fire, burning with the flame

Hearts on fire, burning with desire

Hearts on fire, never be the same

Never be the same

One Day on the Fields of France

Copyright 1994 Greg Tamblyn, Ramblin’ Tamblyn Music

Lance Cowan, Lantzapalooza Music

(A true story from the first world war)

One day on the fields of France, some soldiers went to war

I was among those brave young men who’d never killed before

And when the battle was over I found blood on my hands
